explicitly stated; not merely implied

I grew up immersed in hip hop culture and I've been a typesetter and graphic designer with a passion for typography and print for many years. Currently living in Bristol, I also doodle designs for the uchi clothing brand, do occasional web and type work and enjoy photography and illustration.. But enough about me…

The art of screenprinting

Part of the philosophy of the uchi brand is to reflect the art forms that we love and to keep perfecting our skills.

I love the screen-printing process, the way, after producing a great original image, you then have to spend what could be hours on preparation: separating the colours; exposing the screens; mixing the inks; choosing the right paper; getting the registration on point; then getting unexpected but surprising results. And sometimes, having it all go wrong and starting all over again without even doing one print!

Sometimes screen printing can take longer than it took to produce the artwork in the first place, but you're still glad you didn't go get it digitally reproduced and you're glad that you didn't give it to another screen printer to do, even if it would take a fraction of the time and effort.

“The artwork's done, Mate. Just get it printed.” No! The artwork may be done but the artistry is just beginning…

So I'll do a new piece and hand print an edition of no more than 20. I'll experiment with inks and colours and try new things. The individual nuances that make each print slightly different are something commercial printers simply can't do. I'll spend time in adding different colours to just five prints on 300gsm cotton paper.

Of course, all this detail and skill is wasted if the artwork doesn't hit the uchi mark. So, as well as life drawing studies and brightly coloured images to liven any room, you'll get the deep and intelligent pieces that make uchi the brand it is.
